Geosynthetics provide sustainable solutions that enhance the performance, durability, resilience, and cost-effectiveness of roadway infrastructure. This short course presents an integrated framework for the design, rehabilitation, and long-term performance of roadways using geosynthetics. A key factor in long-term performance is erosion control with geosynthetics, which will be covered in detail. The course emphasizes mechanisms across applications, identification of relevant geosynthetic properties, available design methodologies, and case histories of geosynthetic use in roadway projects.

An outline of the main topics to be covered is as follows:

  • Welcome & Objectives
  • Geosynthetics: Types and Functions
  • Structural Capacity of Roadways
  • Overview of Geosynthetic Applications in Roadways
  • Geosynthetics for Mitigation of Asphalt Reflective Cracking
  • Geosynthetics for Erosion Control of Roadway Shoulders and Embankments:
    • Temporary Erosion Control
    • Permanent Erosion Control
  • Geosynthetics for Stabilization of Unbound Aggregate Layers
  • Geosynthetics for Reduction of Layer Intermixing
  • Geosynthetics for Reduction of Moisture in Structural Layers
  • Geosynthetics for Stabilization of Soft Subgrades
  • Geosynthetics for Mitigation of Distress Induced by Expansive Clays
  • Path Forward & Closure

This is a full-day short course. Course attendees will leave with a working knowledge of the characteristics of different geosynthetics and their use in solving specific problems in roadway design.

Geosynthetics applications in roadways:
The multiple applications of geosynthetics listed in the outline above rely on various mechanisms that, in turn, require geosynthetics to perform multiple functions. Understanding these mechanisms is critical for selecting appropriate design methods and geosynthetic properties. The course will discuss how to incorporate the benefits of geosynthetics into erosion control selection and pavement design. The various applications of geosynthetics in roadways enable quantification of the benefits of adopting them compared with conventional design approaches, including improved performance, extended design life, and reduced carbon footprint.
