Student Poster Competition

GMA and IGS-North America are pleased to announce the Student Research Showcase to be held during Geosynthtetics 2023. This poster competition is intended to highlight the work of students in geosynthetics while offering an opportunity to present on the show floor during the Tuesday lunch break. This is a great chance to show what you’ve got, and have some fun too!

Key Dates
September 12: Call for abstracts for student poster competition
Nov 15: Last day to submit abstracts for consideration
December 9: Invitations to present a poster at the conference will be issued.
January 13: Final day to submit an electronic copy (PDF) of your designed poster.
February 7: Poster Presentation Session takes place

Prizes
1st Place – USD $500 + first choice of full registration to GeoAmericas 2024 or Geotechnical Frontiers 2025
2nd Place – USD $300 + full registration to GeoAmericas 2024 or Geotechnical Frontiers 2025 (remaining conference after 1st place winner selection.)
3rd Place – USD $200

Winners will also be highlighted in the GeoWatch section of Geosynthetics magazine. Cash awards and conference registration offers are sponsored by IGS North America and the Geosynthetic Materials Association. Awards will be issued only to the lead author / presenter of the winning posters. Conference registrations do not have cash value and may not be exchanged for any cash considerations. Future registrations are not transferable. Students do not still need to be studying in 2024/2025 in order to accept future registrations.

Abstracts Guidelines
Students interested in presenting posters at Geosynthetics Conference 2023 should submit abstracts (400 word maximum) on any research/project that includes geosynthetics. Additional students/academics may be listed as co-authors but the student who submits the abstract (and would present if invited) must be listed as the lead author.

Abstracts may be submitted online between September 19 and November 15.

A panel of judges will review the submissions and selected students will be invited to present in Kansas City, Missouri on February 7 at Geosynthetics Conference 2023. All students invited to present posters at the conference will be given free access to the conference February 5 – 7. (Invitations do not include any separately ticketed conference components, and may not be exchanged for cash considerations or transferred to co-authors.)

Students selected to present will be notified by December 9, 2022.

All student authors and co-authors based in the US & Canada will be given IGS North America student memberships for the duration of their engineering studies and be invited to participate in other geosynthetics-related grant and paper competitions offered by the International Geosynthetics Society and IGS North America. Students based outside of US/Canada may be eligible for other student membership opportunities with the IGS and its numerous chapters around the world.

Poster Guidelines

  • Students must be present at Geosynthetics Conference 2023 and present during the special Poster Presentation session to be eligible for prizes.
  • Students are responsible for printing their posters and bringing them to the presentation space on the day of the competition. (See “Day of Poster Competition” below.)
  • Posters must fit within a 4 x 5 ft. space. Text should be legible from 3 – 5 ft. away. Proprietary content (e.g., commercial brands) should be kept to a minimum.
  • Posters should be printed on one side only.
  • Each entry may provide only one poster.
  • There are no required design formats, colors, logos, or templates for the posters.
  • Students who have already submitted an abstract for the technical program are allowed to also submit that same topic for this competition.

Day of Poster Competition

  • Bring your poster to the Learning Zone between 9 and 11 am on the day of your presentation, February 7.
  • Event staff will be on hand to help you locate your board. Thumbtacks and tape will be made available for your use.
  • The poster session will be held from noon and 1pm. Students must be available during this period to give a short (3-5 min) PowerPoint presentation on their work to competition judges and conference attendees, who will be welcomed to view the work.
  • Judges will announce the winners of the competition at the end of the poster presentation session.
  • Posters should be left up through the duration of the poster presentation session and may be removed at the close of the session. Any posters left on the boards will be discarded at the close of the exhibit hall on the presentation day.
